Food Safety & Allergy Awareness
September 11, 2025Food Safety & Allergy Awareness in the Seafood Industry
Food allergies currently affect more than 32 million Americans, and their severity continue to become further recognized. As someone who lives with severe tree-nut allergies, this has been a constant obstacle in my life.
Among the most serious are fish and shellfish allergies. These allergies can be life-threatening, developed at any age, and are not curable like other food allergies. In the seafood industry, where allergens are crucial to daily operations, this presents unique challenges that go far beyond compliance. The key to managing these risks lies in education, awareness, and proactive safety measures.
Education
One of the most effective ways to reduce risk in seafood operations is through education. Food allergies are not always understood, and misconceptions can create dangerous situations. For example, cross-contamination from shared cooking surfaces or airborne particles during preparation can cause reactions even if seafood is not eaten directly. By training staff and raising awareness across the supply chain, seafood companies can protect both their customers and their reputation. One of the industry’s leaders in education offers several programs and educational opportunities.
FARE’s Leadership
Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE) is a leading nonprofit dedicated to improving the lives of those with food allergies. FARE works on multiple fronts advocating for stronger labeling laws, funding scientific research, and creating programs to educate both the public and the food industry.
Seafood distributors face unique challenges with approximately 75–80% of U.S. seafood being imported. Clear communication, traceability, and proper handling are critical. By embracing education and adopting programs like FARE Check and Food Allergy Academy (FAA), seafood companies can reduce risk, strengthen consumer confidence, and contribute to a culture of responsibility within the industry.
Ashley’s Hope for Allergy Awareness
Every year, the Frangella family hosts the Allergy Awareness Benefit in memory of their daughter, Ashley, whose life was tragically cut short by a severe allergic reaction. The benefit celebrates Ashley’s life while raising funds for FARE to continue its mission.
Harbor Seafood is proud to sponsor this event and support the Frangella family’s goal of spreading awareness about the severity of food allergies. Together, we hope to move toward a future where anaphylaxis is no longer a threat to those living with allergies.
